Volunteer: Reading Tutors Needed!

As a Title I School, the achievement gap is a real problem we see with our students. Literacy is a top priority at William C. Abney Academy, integrating multiple evidence-based initiatives to help our students succeed.

The best way of improving a child's academics and promoting high academic achievement overall is reading to children. We are looking for people to come into our school on a regular basis to read to children one-on-one and provide them with meaningful experiences. All students K-6 benefit from individual attention from an adult and would cherish that time.

Volunteers would need to pass a background check prior to starting. Volunteers would be assigned to a teacher who would select students to work with the tutor. Volunteers preference for either older or younger students would be considered when matching with a teacher.
