Volunteer: Station Leader - Food from the Heart

Station Leaders are part coach and part cheerleader. We will have 38 stations at each shift of Food from the Heart & each station will be manned by 12 volunteers. Following a brief training on the morning of the event, Station Leaders will instruct their assigned station on how to assemble meal packages, signal "heavy-lifters" to grab completed meal boxes or refill ingredients, and provide encouragement to their team. Station Leaders help to keep the event moving and create a fun and productive atmosphere!

Station Leaders are provided with a t-shirt and lunch.

Station Leaders will need to be available from 9:00AM-3:00PM on June 21st. You will meet United Way staff at Van Andel Arena before the main event begins.

Volunteer: Get Crafty for KDL: Book LED Candle Holders

Our yearly gala event, Literary Libations, is a fancy affair and we go all out with book themed centerpieces made by the dedicated hands of volunteers. This year we're transforming the branches' "weeded" books (books that are damaged or no longer relevant)into Bookish Candleholders and we need YOU. It's a fun and sociable little project, so we will chat and make new friends while we busily fold book pages. We'll have tea and crumpets and great conversation while we do our part to make the gala magical! We can't wait to meet you! Visit kdl.org to sign up for volunteer shift.

Volunteer: Food Drive Donation Processing

Feeding America West Michigan was recently the recipient of the 25th NALC Stamp Out Hunger Postal Food Drive. Approximately 200,000 pounds of donated food were collected on May 13th, 2017, setting a new all-time record for our food bank!

With such a massive turnout, we are looking for energetic volunteers to help us process these donated goods and get them to families in our communities that are in need! Sorting these donations requires reading fine print, checking packages for possible breakages or contamination, and an overall eye for detail.

IMPORTANT: ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST WEAR CLOSED TOE/HEEL SHOES FOR SAFETY.

Volunteer: Safe Space to Land Bags

Our shelter is providing a safe space for families to land until they find a new home. On their first day with us, moms and dads often have no idea what they are coming into. They may not have even eaten yet that day. Having a quick bag with some essential items can help the transition and ease some stress. Often when a parent comes in for an intake, their kids are with them. These bags provide them with a drink, snack, and some activities to do during the meeting. We have also included some items that may have gotten lost during the housing crisis with the hope of making this an easier transition. This can be a perfect opportunity for a family, extended family, neighborhoods or small groups to collect items and  come together to assemble the bags. Suggested items for bags: Mom/Adult:  Water bottle, Trail mix/granola bar, Notebook, Pen Baby 0-3 years old: Snack, Water bottle or sippy cup, Diapers, Wipes, Stuffed animal, Storybook, Pacifier,  Night light Child 3-10 years old: Water/Juice, Night light, Snack, Book or small toy, Coloring or activity book,  Crayons

Volunteer: Families Helping Families

When our families move out of shelter, we like to be able to give them some practical gifts that support them in their new home!  Putting together these "homemade" recipes is the perfect opportunity for your family to do a service project at home and then bring your gift to our Day Center.   You can view the different options at:  www.familypromisegr.org/volunteer Right now our biggest need is for the Toolbox or Kitchen Kit, but please feel free to call Joni at 608-8917 to get other ideas on our "recipe"needs or other options for volunteering with your children!

Volunteer: Adopt-a-Beach Team Leaders and Volunteers

Looking for a way to take care of your Great Lakes?  Lead or volunteer for an Adopt-a-Beach™ cleanup with the Alliance for the Great Lakes!  We’re always looking for new individuals and groups to lead cleanups or to help out at cleanups that others have planned.  Last year, 15,181 volunteers removed 40,211 pounds of trash from 1,388 cleanups.

Here are two ways you can participate:

Volunteer:  Join a group that has already organized an Adopt-a-Beach™ cleanup. Find an open event near you at greatlakesadopt.org. In addition to picking up debris, volunteers record what they find to help guide education and solutions.    Lead:  You can become a team leader and coordinate your own event at your favorite beach. Team leaders help to recruit volunteers, coordinate the day of the event and submit results from their event online. To learn more, visit our team leader webpages.
